Community Based Cancer-Control: A Seminar for American Indian and Alaska Native Community Health Advocates

Goal: to provide community members with the tools to approach researchers, identify research questions, write grants and collaborate on projects that address cancer health disparities.

This training seminar is open to tribal community members with an interest in improving cancer prevention, screening and treatment in his or her community.

Tribal Child Protective Services Academy XXV

Location: Inter Tribal Council of Arizona, Inc., 2214 North Central Avenue, Suite 100, Phoenix, AZ 85004

Purpose: To meet the ongoing training needs of tribal workers for core training in the identification, intervention and treatment of child abuse and neglect that is consistent with tribal strengths, resources, priorities and concerns and with Indian child welfare practice. The training is designed for Tribal social services staff, health workers, law enforcement officers, Tribal Court Staff and others who deal with child abuse and neglect. The academy will be limited to 25 participants and will require a two week commitment. Priority will be given to new Tribal CPS workers.

        1. Telemedicine to Provide Health Care to Rural Schools [Feb. 17, 2009] Asheville Citizen-Times, NC - Dr. Steve North, a family physician practicing at the Bakersville Community Medical Clinic, is considering the use of advanced videoconferencing technology as a way to expand school-based health centers providing health care, mental health and other services in areas where accessing health care can be difficult .      2.  Doctors Are where Patients Aren't [Feb. 12, 2009] Daily Yonder - Dr. Robert Bowman, MD, describes the broken design of American health care: physicians are concentrated in locations and careers that fail to serve the majority and the most urgent medical needs. [Read Article]

     3.  SCHIP Provides Health Coverage for 7.4 Million Children in 2008 - [Jan 27, 2009]   Some 7.4 million children were enrolled in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) in 2008 -- a four percent increase over the previous year, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced today.      4. Study Finds Black Stroke Victims Wait Longer for ER  Help - [Feb 19, 2009] Chicago Sun-Times, IL - According to a national study African Americans who had a stroke waited longer to be seen in hospital emergency room than whites. [Read Article]

     2. Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) Urges People to Check Pantries for Recalled Food - [Jan 23, 2009] - The Arizona Department of Health Services wants citizens to check their shelves and cupboards for any recalled food tied to the recent Salmonella outbreak. A complete list of products affected by the recall can be found on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) website www.fda.gov. Grants and Opportunities

     1. HRSA: Grants to States to Support Oral Health Workforce Activities – Deadline: April 1, 2009

Description: Part D of Title III of the Public Health Service Act as amended, Subpart X - Primary Dental Programs, Section 340G (42 USC 256g) authorized the Secretary to award grants to States to improve the accessibility of the oral health workforce for under served geographic areas and populations. Section 340F defines a designated shortage area as “an area, population group, or facility that is designated by the Secretary as a dental health professional shortage area under section 332 or designated by the applicable State as having a dental health manpower shortage.” This Program is designed to help States address demonstrated oral health workforce needs.

Expected Number of Awards: 18 

Estimated Total Program Funding: $1,910,619

     2. AHRQ Grant Program for Large Conference Support (R13) and (U13) - Deadlines: April 12, 2009; August 12, 2009; December 12, 2009

Purpose: This program supports conferences that include plans and strategies for
disseminating conference materials and products to other audiences, beyond the
participants attending the event. The types of conferences eligible for support include:
research development - conferences where issues or challenges in the delivery of
health services are defined and a research agenda or strategy for studying them is
developed; design and methodology - conferences where methodological and technical
issues of major importance in the field of health services research are addressed or new
designs and methodologies are developed; dissemination conferences and research
training, infrastructure and career development conferences.

Eligibility:Public or non-profit private institution, such as a university, college, or a
faith-based or community-based organization, for-profit organizations for U13
applications only, unit of local or State government, unit of local Tribal government or
State Tribal government

Award Amount: $100,000

     3. Women Helping Others (WHO) Foundation: Education/Literacy Grants - Deadline March 17, 2009

Purpose: To support grassroots charities serving the overlooked needs of women and children in the United States; to support free after school organizations and for the implementation or expansion of education and/or literacy programs for low-income children of all ages. Suggested funding requests include healthy snacks, books, educational field trips, etc. The foundation does not provide funding for salaries.

Eligibility: 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations in the United States and Puerto Rico (no affiliates accepted) and must have been incorporated for a minimum of three years prior to application. Preference will be given to organizations with an operating budget of $3 million or less, those not dependent upon government grants, and those with greater organizational program costs than personnel costs
Award Amount:
The maximum request amount per organization is $5,000

     1. Women's Health Data Book - The seventh edition of the Women’s Health Data Book, selectively highlights emerging issues and trends in women’s health using a variety of data sources. The data book, developed by the Health Resources and Services Administration, includes information and data on population characteristics, health status and health services utilization. New topics in the 2008 edition include occupational injury, maternal mortality, digestive disorders, oral health, eye health and urologic disorders. Racial and ethnic, sex and gender and socioeconomic disparities in women’s health are also highlighted. The data book is intended to be a concise reference for policymakers and program managers at the federal, state, and local levels to identify and clarify issues affecting the health of women.

     2.  Community Health Worker Becomes a Recogni9zed Occupation - Community Health Worker (CHW) is now a recognized occupational category along with many other occupations.

    3 .  Healthcare for Homeless Veterans Programs by State- Serves as a directory of programs that address the healthcare needs of homeless veterans. Organized alphabetically by state, and includes the District of Columbia. Listings offer the program name, location, full address, and phone number.

     4.  Community Health Status Indicator Report - The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently released the Community Health Indicators (CHSI) which is designed to inform public health professionals and community members about state- and county-level health status indicators such as: causes of death, tobacco use, diet, physical activity, and drug and alcohol use. Available reports also include Healthy People 2010 targets and information on vulnerable populations, access to care, and much more

     5.  Health Workforce Shortage Study Reports - The report addresses the primary health care workforce shortage in Minnesota and recommendations that would address the State's health workforce challenges particularly in rural communities.
